Everything you need to know about getting married in Puerto Rico
Before you book the perfect hotel or secure a wedding planner, you’re probably wondering what the requirements are to get married in Puerto Rico and how to get your marriage license.
The process to get a marriage license in Puerto Rico is fairly straightforward, especially if you’re a U.S. citizen. Luckily, there’s no waiting period to get married in Puerto Rico, so nothing will delay your big day! It takes just about three days to get your license.
First, you must get a marriage license from the Demographic Registrar’s Office. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Current (i.e. not expired) government-issued photo ID like driver’s license or passport
- Birth certificate
- Medical certification: Bring a letter from your doctor certifying that you are deemed healthy
- Blood tests: If you are Puerto Rican (or your soon-to-be spouse is) you both must have blood tests done (for U.S. citizens, this is only required if your home state requires it)
- Internal Revenue stamp (purchase for $150)
- Divorce decrees (if previously married)
- Former spouse’s death certificate (if widowed)
- For a destination wedding: A sworn statement/affidavit of intention saying that you’re in Puerto Rico specifically to get married
In addition to the marriage license, make sure the person marrying you is a registered officiant. If a friend or family member is performing the ceremony, you simply need a registered officiant to sign the legal documentation as the Officiant of Record.
