Discover the Magic of Vejigante Masks

One of the most exciting parts of Carnival season is seeing Vejigante masks of all shapes, sizes, and colors in the streets. From Ponce to San Juan, you’ll see a variety of interpretations of the Spanish tradition from the middle ages. Also known as “bladdernte,” these characters will carry around inflated and dried cow bladders that have been painted in bright colors and bop people in the streets on the head in jest. Once thought to be symbols of demons used by the Catholic church, these fun creations have been reclaimed as part of Puerto Rico’s art and culture with influences by the African and Taíno peoples. You can learn more about the Vejigante masks and how to make one yourself at the Casa Museo de Vejigante.
